WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

Chinese values are largely taken for granted. Few of us understand what they are, how they came about and if it is even advantageous to uphold them. We’ve broken the value-mould and embraced cosmopolitanism.

The problem is that when everybody does whatever the hell he or she likes - in setting career goals, choosing a partner or having children - we become more directionless rather than less. Society becomes fragmented. Families come apart.

The first step to change is to start by understanding yourself, your culture and its underlying values that influence so much of your life.

PANG S

The Author

Pang is a Hainanese born in Malaysia, and his family moved to Singapore when he was young. During his film career, he always wanted to write a book about what it means to be Chinese. His experiences as a filmmaker, as well as the stories he heard from friends and people he met on various travels has given him a lot of material for his book. In Pang's debut work, he deconstructs Chinese culture, giving readers a fresh perspective on what it means to consider oneself Chinese. His writing is a mix of cultural observations and personal experiences. He believes that everyone has their own cultural background, and only when we understand them, we can truly understand ourselves.
